What is my content marketing niche?
When it comes to a discussion of content marketing, one of the first things brought up is usually "the niche" paradox or dilemma or whatever you wish to call it. The Niche is king, some say. As soon as you find your niche, you can have an easier time finding clients and project. The problem is, of course, that before you find the niche you have to do a lot of other content marketing work first.
So what is MY content marketing niche?
A number of such discussions lately got me thinking about my niche. Do I have one as a content writer in Edmonton? If so, what is it? Over the past 10+ years, I've written a lot about a lot... Now thinking about the topics I've written about the most and for the largest number of clients, here is my list of potential niches:- real estate
- insurance
- healthcare
- politics
- education
- IT
- travel
Which one would you recommend as my Edmonton content marketing niche?
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Forget aggressive SEO - double the content marketing efforts
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) seems to be getting quite an ill fame these days. More and more companies spring up daily professing to know the tricks and the algorithms to make Google and other search engines fall in love with your website. Sadly, these claims are often at least partially true, and websites that have no information value or possess no real advantages over others in their fields suddenly jump to the first pages of search results. I'm not sure that most of us can do anything about this epidemic at the moment, but I know for certain that this is not the time to give up on quality content marketing as the opposite of tricky and unethical practices we are being force-fed today.
Isn't content marketing the same thing?
You are justified if you are finding it difficult to differentiate between legitimate content marketing and questionable online marketing practices. In fact, those promising to turn backward websites and blogs into world leaders over a 24-hour period would love it if all of us stopped seeing the difference between these things. After all, online marketing is still the daily bread of thousands of honest professionals out there, so those violating business ethics would like to be associated with the good people and trusted business practices. Content marketing is, however, not about keyword stuffing and SEO ranking - at least, that is not its main purpose. First and foremost, content marketing is about attracting humans, not robots, to websites and platforms that have something exciting or unique or unusual to share. Content marketing is about advertising products, companies, organizations, campaigns and services through language. Not manipulating people's minds and playing tricks, mind you. I, for one, am proud of being a content marketing professional - over the years, I've helped some great people and teams reach their customers and expand their reach through original and interesting copywriting. I will continue doing so in the face of the ongoing onslaught against the very notion of the Internet as an equal and open information space.

When content writing was a hobby and became a profession
Presently I find myself in an interesting situation where the skills and experience that used to be just additional to my main job or my main part of life suddenly became vital to my very survival as a small business owner. I've been doing content writing for years - blogs, website content, guest blogs, articles, sometimes stuffed with keywords and sometimes much more free - all of this used to be something happening in my life, but somewhere on the sidelines, as I was busy with graduate school, communications work and teaching. Now I have to remember the strategies and tools I used to help others get noticed online in order to, well, get noticed online.
I enjoy writing immensely, especially when I have more freedom to play with the words and make my text personalized and anything but standard or predictable. Keywords are generally not a problem, but having too many of them or trying to put too many of them into a text is, in my opinion, a huge mistake that is made far too often. Anyone working in the field of content marketing or online marketing can immediately notice when a text is made to order instead of being a free product of someone's brain, fast fingers and imagination. A poet at heart, I love my present state where writing is what I do for a living.

Some personal recommendations for improving English listening comprehension
Over the years, I've been aked by many students for some advice on extra resources to work on their English listening skills. Here are a few that have resonated the best with the most:
| Listening comprehension the old-fashioned way |
- For the more advanced learners: my favourite Coursera, an opportunity to learn a lot of new things from the best universities and instructors out there. Not English courses, mind you, but courses in diverse fields, such as history, astronomy, mathematics, social studies, statistics, economics, music etc.
- TED Talks about as many topics as you can imagine. Used extensively throughout the world to improve listening skills.
- ESL Bits: books, short stories, lectures and songs, all under one roof and sorted by learner English levels.
Enjoy! Contact me for more suggestions.

Just came to Canada? Need help with your English communication skills?
Moving to a new country can be a frightening and quite stressful experience, and not feeling confident in English certainly does not make matters any better. Fortunately, there are classes available from a number of immigrant serving organizations in Edmonton, such as the Edmonton Immigrant Services Association (EISA), Catholic Social Services (CSS) and others. While these organizations do everything they can to ensure a personal approach to each newcomer to Canada and Alberta, their resources are, of course, limited, and it is often difficult to get help with your English on an individual basis.
10 years ago, I was a recent immigrant myself, and I know what you are going through first-hand. I would be happy to help you with your English communication skills. Contact me today to discuss.

Getting a tutor is not the whole solution - it is one of the keys
Once in a while, each instructor gets a phone call, email or text
message from a potential student that makes one feel uncomfortable. The reason
is in the student's apparent belief that simply getting an ESL tutor would make
their English soar to new heights. Without any work involved, that is.
Learning English (or any other language,
for that matter) is not and should not be as simple as hiring someone to do the
heavy lifting for you. This is, after all, about what goes on in your brain.
Yes, your ESL instructor knows English (one would hope), but does that
immediately make your own English proficiency better? No, it does not. Yet the
erroneous impression on the part of some learners remains.
For this reason, instructors tend to shy away
from those that want to hear some guarantees of rapid improvement. Without
diligent work on the part of the student, all of the instructors' promises,
credentials and reassurances are meaningless to the matter at hand: helping the
student with their English.

What is the ideal English class size?
How do you prefer to study? Individually, in pairs, in small or large groups? Which setting do you find the most efficient and fun? These questions are important to grasp in any learning situation, but they gain additional meaning when we talk about language classes, such as those for English as a Second Language (ESL).
Some people find it hard to study completely alone, and this is especially understandable when one studies a foreign language. Grammar and phonetics can, to a certain extent, be mastered without interaction with others, but true freedom in a language comes through talking with fellow learners, discussions of a variety of topics and responding to the thoughts and ideas that come up in such conversations. "Interaction with others" should not, however, be understood as being in groups of 15 or 25 people - this is not at all conducive to successfully learning English or any other language.
This is why I would personally recommend a class size of no more than 10 people (if possible, no more than six). In a multicultural environment such as Canada, there would no doubt be a great mix of professions, hobbies and heritages in a group of this size, which would allow for wonderful discussions. At the same time, the group would not be too large to be too noisy and difficult to manage for the instructor. Every student's questions and concerns would then be addressed promptly and adequately.
If you want to have rapid progress in your English, I would suggest starting with one-on-one classes with a professional and experienced instructor fluent in the language. This way, you can quickly set up the base of your grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and build up confidence to talk with others. Get in touch today to discuss details!
